After about a 40-minute drive we will arrive at the Volcano – at an altitude of approx. 1000 metres. Here you will head up to the crater on foot, this is an interesting, but safe walk up. And once at the top you will find some of the most breath-taking scenery on earth!
The morning will then continue with a visit to the site of the ancient city of Herculaneum. This archaeological site holds some of the best examples of intact and fascinating finds which allow us to really look at the past and understand what life before the eruption was that devastated the town in 79AD. Admire the frescos and mosaics which have been lovingly preserved, alongside the remains of the poor inhabitants themselves.
At the end of this visit we will head onto an interesting stop where you will be able to see the vines that grow on the slopes of Vesuvius. We will then have a wine tasting – where you will get to try some of the most well known wines of the region – such as Lacrima Christi, in both white & red. During this tasting you will also get to sample some delicious local delicacies – such as spaghetti with “piennolo” tomato – a variety of cherry tomato that is grown on the slopes of Vesuvius itself. It’s a simple but delicious dish – especially when accompanied by a glass of wine. Our day has reached its end – but before you arrive back in your hotel, you will have time for one more stop to take photographs of the beautiful Sorrentine coastline.
