Herculaneum is at the feet of Mount Vesuvius and is also known as Ercolano Herculaneum is known throughout the world for the remains of its Roman city buried, together with Pompeii, under the pumice & ashes provoked by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. This Roman town was originally discovered when a well was being dug in the 18th Century at a depth of 50 – 60 feet below the surface. Initially a series of shafts and tunnels were dug to strip the site of any saleable valuables by robbers. However, between 1749 to 1765 Herculaneum was explored on a more scientific basis for the Bourbon Kings of Naples and the Two Sicilies.
