Pompeii is a Roman town which sits on the southern slopes of the volcanic mountain, the town and it’s people suffocated by the huge eruption in AD 79, their personal belonging conserved for centuries. The excavation site is a working progress since it’s discovery in 1748. When you walk around the streets, reading the graffiti, looking at the different shops that had been and the private homes and villas, you get a real feel of what life was like in the Roman times.
After leaving Pompeii, we recommend lunch & wine tasting at a family run vineyard located at the bottom of Vesuvius The vineyard will offer some of their fine wines and traditional local food. At the Vineyard you will get the opportunity to taste 4 types of wine from the region and have lunch in the winery restaurant. The lunch will comprise of local cheese & salami served with bread, oil & bruschetta to start with, followed by spaghetti with fresh cherry tomatoes, a traditional local dessert and finished off with an Apricot liquor. The cost of wine tasting with lunch is 30 euros per person. If you are not keen on wine we can take you to a delicious pizzeria for your lunch.
After lunch your private driver will take you to the ruins of Herculaneum. Herculaneum like Pompeii was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 but is often sidestepped because of alluring Pompeii, Herculaneum is smaller but the villas are more preserved, The most preserved of them all is Villa dei Papiri believed to be belonging to Julius Caesar’s father in law or his son, currently this villa is under restoration. The casa del Altrio Mosaico Is also worth exploring as you would not want to miss seeing the well preserved beautiful mosaic flooring.
